After a brief visit with Padméâs family, Anakin escorted her up to the Lake Country. The lodge Padmé had chosen for them to stay at was beautiful, like everything else on Naboo, and just as isolated as she had promised. The island it stood on was one of several that glowed a rich green in the middle of a shimmering blue lake at the foot of a mountain range. The caretaker drove them out to the lodge in a water speeder, which gave Anakin plenty of time to study it. It only took a few seconds to see that anyone approaching the lodge would be easy to spot long before they arrived, so Anakin relaxed and enjoyed the view.
The lodge itself seemed large to Anakin, though it was small compared to the palaces that lined the streets of the capital. He paused on a terrace just outside, leaning on a carved marble balustrade that separated the terrace from the flower garden just below. Padmé joined him, and it was no effort at all to turn his attention from the distant mountains to the girl beside him.
âI love the water,â Padmé said dreamily.
âI do, too,â Anakin said, looking down at her. âI guess it comes from growing up on a desert planet.â
Padmé gave him a sidelong look, then dropped her eyes to the lake once more. âWe used to lie on the sand and let the sun dry us, and try to guess the names of the birds singing.â
âI donât like sand. Itâs coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft ⦠and smooth.â Without thinking, he touched her arm.
Padmé gave him another nervous glance and waved at the lake, pulling her arm away as if by accident. âThere was a very old man who lived on the island,â she said. âHe used to make glass out of sand. And vases and necklaces out of the glass.â She smiled, and looked up at him as if to share her memories. âThey were magical.â
âEverything here is magical,â Anakin said, staring down into her eyes. She had the most beautiful brown eyesâ¦.
âYou could look into the glass and see the water. The way it ripples and moves,â Padmé went on. She lowered her eyes. âIt looked so real ⦠but it wasnât.â
âSometimes, when you believe something to be real, it becomes real.â
âI used to think that if you looked too deeply into the glass you would lose yourself,â Padmé said softly. But she didnât seem to be talking about the glass anymore.
âI think itâs true,â Anakin said. He felt warm, and he couldnât look away from Padmé. He didnât want to look away. He wanted to be here, with her, forever. He bent forward and kissed her.
At first, she didnât resist; then suddenly she pulled away. The abrupt movement brought Anakin back to his senses as well, and he let her go.
âNo. I shouldnât have done that,â Padmé said.
âIâm sorry,â Anakin replied. Well, he wasnât sorry that he had kissed her; his lips still tingled from the pressure of hers.
